21 films! That’s how many Marvel movies you’d need to watch to have a complete understanding of what’s going to happen in this week’s massive release, Avengers: Endgame. That’s 2704 minutes or 60 hours of watching (I dare you to make it through in one sitting), and it’s been 11 years in the making! The scope is unreal. If you think this is just another Marvel movie, think again. This is a phenomenon.
It’s interesting to think about a time before the Marvel movie, or how long their popularity will last. Will other universes like this come to fruition? I think so. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars are certainly taking a stab at it. Monster movies gave it a shot, and failed. King Kong and Godzilla will soon share a universe, and that’s something I’m looking forward to. Still, none of these come close in size to the universe Marvel has created.
“Endgame” is a worthy name for this movie. While this may be the end of an era in film history, I think it’s just the beginning of something entirely new. I’m sure our favorite superheroes aren’t going anywhere any time soon (most of them anyway), and more evil is lurking around the corner. Other universes will pop up for people who are more interested in magic, dragons, or alternate dimensions. For now though, let’s bask in this moment. For one, I can’t wait to see Spidey… and all of the other Avengers kick Thanos’ big purple butt into the next universe.
